3. “Joy is being Franciscan” zeggen wij zo in het Engels.
Waarmee hou ik me bezig?
Broederlijke leven is belangrijk. Franciscus legt nadruk telkens weer over broederlijke leven. Hij zegt in Testament, “De Heer had enkele broderies mij gegeven.” Franciscus zegt ook, “if a mother loves her son born of flesh how much more brother should love the other born of the spirit.
Broeders hebben elkaar nodig. Brothers have only each other. Therefore brothers have to be caring and concerning towards each other.
EUCHARIST
INTRODUCTION
The holy Eucharist completes the Christian initiation.
Eucharist is the source and summit of Christian life – all other sacraments and various ministries in the church are bound up with the Eucharist.
Baptism prepares us for the reception of the Holy Eucharist
Confirmation strengthens our union with Christ
Reconciliation establishes a loving and joyful relationship with Christ
Holy orders endows the ministry of celebrating the Eucharist
Marriage is an image and union of Christ and his church consummated in the Holy Eucharist
The holy Eucharist as our Holy viaticum prepares us for eternity.
Eucharist is the culmination of both
Of God’s action of making the world Holy in Christ
Of the worship we offer Christ and through Christ to the Father in the Holy spirit
DIFFERENT NAMES
Eucharist: thanksgiving to God. It refers to the Jewish action of proclaiming God’s works of creation, redemption and sanctification during the meal
Lord’s Supper: because of its connection with the supper which Jesus took with his disciples on the eve of his suffering and death.
Breaking of Bread: because Jesus used this rite, part of a Jewish meal, when the master of the table blessed and distributed the bread. Earlier it was one bread that was broken shared and the first Christians believed that all who eat the one broken bread, Christ, enter into communion with Christ.
Holy sacrifice: because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ.
Holy Meal: because the Eucharist is celebrated in the background of the table fellowship, meal.
Holy Communion: because by this sacrament we unite ourselves with Christ and we form a single body.
Holy Mass: because the liturgy in which the mystery of salvation is accomplished concluded with the sending forth-Missio- we are sent to live as faithful and loving children of God.
THE SIGNS OF BREAD AND WINE
Bread and wine are at the heart of the Eucharistic Celebration
These by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit become Christ’s Body and Blood.
In the Old Testament, the Bread and wine were offered in sacrifice among the first fruits of the earth as a sign of grateful acknowledgement to Creator.
In Exodus, this bread gained a new significance-God’s work of Redemption.
Cup of joy is about the festive spirit – eschatological dimension – life after death.
When Jesus instituted, he gave a new meaning to Blessing of bread and Wine.
Mt 14, 13 – 21 Multiplication of loaves
John 6: I am the Bread of Life
INSTITUTION OF THE EUCHARIST
Luke 22, 14 – 20; Matthew 26, 17 – 29; Mk 14, 12-25, I Corinthians 11, 23-24.
Lk 22: 19-20 “then he took a loaf of bread and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave to them saying, ‘This is my body which is given for you” and he did the same when he said, “this cup is poured out for you”.
Jesus selects unleavened bread and the cup from the Jewish pass over meal and transforms them that they become vehicles for his Eucharistic self –gift to the church.
Jesus has given totally new meaning to this ritual celebration of the Jewish, a new sacramental memorial.
The command of Jesus, “Do this in memory of me” – the liturgical celebration until Christ comes. We carry out this command of the lord by celebration the memorial of his sacrifice. The last supper is repeated …. It is the memorial of cross.
The Eucharist is instituted not only to make present Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension but also to dwell right here among us.
SACRIFICIAL ASPECT OF THE EUCHARIST
In the Eucharist Jesus himself is the sacrificial victim. Calvary is the clear reference to this.
Paul says that the son of God “loved me and gave himself for me” (Gal 2, 20). Similarly in John Jesus says, “I lay down my life for the sheep” (Jn. 10, 15); and Titus 3, 14 makes use of the same sacrificial expression to designate voluntary death, “Jesus Christ who gave himself for us…”
To give himself for is an expression which designates the voluntary death of Jesus, a free offering of self to God.
It is precisely the same expression that recurs “This is my body which is given for you” (Lk. 22, 19). The parallel expression, the blood “to be poured out” is even more sacrificial.
Thus we can conclude that Jesus is applying to himself the language of sacrifice.
Eucharist is above all else a sacrifice. It is the sacrifice of redemption and also the sacrifice of New Covenant as we believe.
The sacrificial aspect of the Eucharist is even clearer in our celebration of the Eucharist. At first Eucharist Jesus offered himself, he was both offerer and victim. Now when we celebrate the Eucharist we offer the very same victim- Christ himself.
Our catholic liturgy also clearly mentions sacrificial aspect very clearly:” we offer you his body and blood”
The sacrifice of Christ and the Eucharist are one single sacrifice.
WHAT DO WE OFFER?
Just imagine the entire process through which we have this bread and wine on the altar. The alter boy brings to the altar.
The sacristan brings it to the sanctuary. Someone else fetches it from the place of manufacturing. There are so many people involved in making the bread for the Eucharist. The things necessary for bread are bought in the market. Someone brings these things to the market.
The farmer together with his family and workers plough the field, sow the seed, water the crop, harvest it and sell it to the middleman who will then send it to the market. In this entire process, see the number of people involved, variety of emotions attached, the farmer may have had a good harvest or a bad one.
There may have been moments of joy or sorrow. In short, the entire human race is contained in the bread and wine offered on the altar.
We offer people with their longings, expectations, disappointments, joys and sorrows. There is no one who is left out.
It is not only the humanity that is brought before the altar but also the creation: the sun, the rain, the moon, the clouds, the animals, birds and worms.
There is no creation that can be left out in the growing of wheat and in the produce of bread and wine on the altar.
This chain of actions and relations make it clear that long before the bread became the body of Christ on the altar, the bread has been the symbol of body of Christ, meaning the entire creation.
WHAT DO WE COMMEMORATE?
We commemorate Christ’s Passover and make present the unique sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
Jesus did not avoid death but he faced it out of love. He has for us. He was then raised from the dead on the third day.
The Eucharist is therefore the passage from death to life, a sacrifice which re-presents the sacrifice on the cross.
What takes place on the cross in an affective death of dying Jesus. Here is a man of my own race dying as he himself told me. He is dying for me, for us and for this gathering around the altar.
We ask Jesus, “Why do you do this?”, “For what”, “Why?”.
One can very well visualize the enormity of suffering, excruciating pain of Jesus, the outrageous misery, agonizing torment, never-ending humiliations, mockeries and sneers. We ask Jesus, “Why?”
Jesus says, “When I am lifted up, I will draw all people to myself.” Therefore when we stand before the altar and witness the affective death of Jesus, I need to be drawn to him.
THE PRESENCE OF CHRIST
Christ said. “This is my body,” and “this is my blood.”
It has been the conviction of Church that the bread and wine are transformed into Christ’s body and blood through the consecration
We therefore believe in the real presence of Jesus Christ.
Christ Jesus who died and was raised from the dead is present in many ways. Most especially He is present in the Eucharistic bread and wine
This is a mystery of faith
We do not see the drama of Calvary or we do not see Jesus with our physical eyes.
But our faith teaches us that He is true living and present under the form of bread and wine
This summer, students of the Corporation High School at K K Pudur in the city are on a digital mission to fight alcoholism. Wanting to make the best use of their holidays, seven students of the school have embarked on a campaign against liquor consumption and its ill-effects through the Digital Storytelling (DST) format.
As a part of their summer camp, the students of classes-VII, VIII and IX have made efforts to interact with alcoholics, visit TASMAC outlets and seek advice from medical practitioners on the ill-effects of alcohol and ways to fight and overcome the condition. The students are helped by the American India Foundation, which has tied up with the Coimbatore Corporation.
For most students, the fight against alcoholism begins at home. “My father usually drinks and troubles us. When we decided to do a theme-based DST, there was no doubt that the theme would be alcoholism,” says Durga, a student.
The students said they were inspired by stories they heard at de-addiction centres. “Some inmates were crying as they spoke to us. Many were happy that they could lead a happy life once de-addicted. We felt a sense of pride in working with the theme,” says Gracy.
Seven different projects were created by students at a five-day summer camp across 23 corporation schools between April 22-May 24, says V Alexander, regional coordinator, American India Foundation.
My view:
Shouldn’t the church relates organisations take up more of such projects? Thanks to those religious and dioceses who run such projects.
Rajasthan:
Besides running a hospital and a school in Rajasthan, the Franciscan sisters have embarked on a new agricultural project of running an organic farm.
The sisters have been doing the farming on their two acre plot.
The inspiration came after the nuns visited Tarumitra Bio-reserve in Patna, where they saw students led by Ms Margaret Molomoo making a great success of their farm in organic farming.
Sr. Isabel, the superior of the small community, said she felt organic farming was more appropriate for Franciscans.
“The intense use of poisonous pesticides and chemical fertilizers have been creating havoc both on the land and its inhabitants” she said.
The nun said that people’s health has deteriorated since the introduction of the new farming methods of India’s ‘Green Revolution’.
With some help from students, the nuns planted a local variety of wheat and did not use any chemical fertilizers or pesticide sprays.
Their first crop was mature and ripe by the end of March.
When the harvesting and threshing was complete, the sisters weighed up the wheat which came out to be 27 quintals. Over 10,000 rupees worth of hay was an extra bonus.
“The best part of the whole story has been that all of us got involved with the land. The traditional respect people had towards the earth is fast disappearing” said Sr. Ishpriya.

The religious life is in need of a radical renewal today. We acknowledge with great esteem the way the religious live their mission and charism in India but at the same time there is an urgency to restore the credibility of our religious life. The church worldwide finds itself in the crisis in various areas. This is however is not a new situation. Church has survived for the last two thousand years and has overcome all the crises she had faced. The crises have been overcome for the larger part by the dedication and commitment of those who responded to the crises with a new way of life. The religious congregations have been founded in those crisis situations to address the issues. Over the period of time however the religious congregations have lost the original intention and the radicalism of the founders and the religious congregations today have become merely institutions!
Pope Francis said that church cannot become an NGO and that the priests are not functionaries. In this light, it may be good to look into what we are doing as religious in the name of mission. Our missionary endeavours need to reflect the spirit of Gospel and the evangelical vows. The provincial chapters and the various meetings organised at the congregational level, provincial level and national level often raise an alarm over our convenient life style and the need for prophetic and missionary presence in the world. Somehow it is not realized in actuality! The religious life is infected with craving for power, money, fame and popularity. We go to any length to see that our institutions become the number one! We see that we make good profit from the institutions! In some places we end up serving the wealthy who actually do need us to run an institution because with the money that the rich have they will get such service even if we do not provide. There is another quite a big society who cannot afford even an ordinary life who in fact need our service.
I read in an article on the religious life the following. “Excessive institutionalisation has sucked the spirit and vitality of religious life today. Increasingly, security of the institution has removed the basic insecurity demanded by the Gospel. Though religious life is of its essence prophetic, prophecy has become easily institutionalised by achievement. Religious are no longer seen as the people on the cutting edge, but rather are viewed as people intimately connected with maintaining the institutions of society.” I am not cynical about and disillusioned with the religious life. I believe in the innate power of religious life. I deeply believe that the religious can today make strong impact in the world and I only feel that it is time that we take our presence seriously and do justice to what we have professed to live by. Do we dare to come out of the existential and established and institutionalised life style to become gospel witnesses in its truest sense? When we engage ourselves in institutionalised ministries which sometimes end up serving the rich and creates possibilities for financial gain, we are influenced by the mentality of this competitive and business world. This has a great bearing on our presence as religious and to those who come to join us. Such works carried out in the name of mission and service fail to inspire the young and they fail to be witnesses of Gospel values. They become the opposite – counter cultural witnesses to Gospel itself.
The formation of those who come to embrace the religious life is very crucial. The young cannot afford to see the complacency that is widely present in the religious life. We cannot present to the young false ideals and visions. We cannot ask the young to profess the evangelical vows without ensuring that we create all possibilities and environments to live the vows. A young religious does not come to us to be a teacher and a nurse and a social worker if these works are not carried out in accordance with the Gospel values. Our vocation promotion brochures often highlight the number of institutions that we proudly run. Vocation promotion sometimes ends up being a programme of recruiting personnel to run the institutions. There is still fire among the religious. There are a large number of religious who dare to live their commitment truly and authentically. Let us not find a reprieve in those who are true and committed and who have even laid down their lives serving the needy! They are just a few! The mind-set that influences the decision making must change! A courageous and daring initiative to move out of cozy-institutionalised-comfort zones to be among the needy and poor is the need of time. Can the Leadership who are responsible to lead the respective congregations in the footsteps of the founders embark on a change that is so urgent today? Failing to change, we will be consciously pushing our religious life into irrelevance and destruction!
